Early growth for Carousell Philippines
Since the Singapore-based mobile retail service provider Carousell Philippines launched in May, its market listings have grown 110 per cent month-on-month, with 240 per cent growth in transactions.
“The Philippines is one of the hottest mobile commerce markets in Southeast Asia, thanks to a young and digitally savvy population,” says co-founder/president Marcus Tan. “As we consume more, there is also a pressing need to get rid of things we no longer have use for, many of which are still in good condition.”
This is the concept behind the Carousell online marketplace, where app users can buy and sell used items including clothes, fashion accessories, beauty products, furniture, art, books and even cars. Selling, says the company, is as easy as taking a picture, while buying is as simple as chatting.
“Scrolling through the marketplace is like rummaging through a box of surprises,” says Tan. “There’s the thrill of discovering something rare and unique, from vintage cameras from the 1920s to a painting by local artist Oscar Zalameda.”
Users can link up with others who share similar interests, such as comic collectors, Lego fans and car enthusiasts.
Tan describes the Philippines as Carousell’s fastest-growing market, with a half-million listings already. The service is available now in more than 14 cities, including Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Taipei. The most popular categories include fashion, electronics, lifestyle gadgets, books, toys and furniture.
As well as the app, free from the App Store of Google Play, a desktop version is available.
