Metro Manila malls to change hours to ease traffic
To help ease holiday traffic, shopping malls in Metro Manila will adopt the “open-close late” scheme that sets their business hours at 11am to 11pm, starting on Sunday.
It is hoped this will cut be at least 3200 the number of vehicles heading to malls during the morning rush hour, says Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) assistant GM for planning Jojo Garcia.
“An average of 200 vehicles is lining up at each mall every day by 9am. In eight malls alone, we can remove 1600 vehicles off the road during morning rush hour.”
Malls usually open from 10am to 9 or 10pm.
Major roads in Metro Manila have 25 shopping malls, 16 of these along EDSA alone. Major traffic contributors are in the CBDs of Quezon City, Makati and Pasig.
Mall-wide sale events will also be limited to weekends, says Garcia, whose comments follow a meeting with mall owners.
Historically, traffic volume in Metro Manila swell by 15 to 20 per cent during the holidays, says the authority.
