MyPhone plans in-phone store MyBarko for Philippine brands

Local mobile phone brand and multimedia company MyPhone will launch a built-in e-commerce platform exclusively for Filipino brands on new models of its phones.

The new e-marketplace, MyBarko, will allow its users to purchase local products online without MyPhone charging merchants for their placements on the platform.

David Lim, MyPhone’s president and CEO, said that at first around 50 local brands will be available by the time the service goes live in July.

“We envision our portal design for the young. It’s very millennial,” he said, speaking at the launch of Brand Pilipinas, an advocacy group for Filipino brands.

MyBarko will also assist local start-ups in gaining a foothold in both the Philippines and abroad, according to Lim. He added that for the past five years, MyPhone has sold up to six million units a year, including models marketed to Overseas Filipinos in Hong Kong, Macau, and Singapore.
